2010 changes

From a personal standpoint, I’m well aware that my team is crap (despite my herculean efforts to try to improve my team through trades) so I’ve started thinking about what’s coming up next season as far as changes and improvements that can be made. Here’s what I’m thinking about:

Scoring:
I’ve heard the complaints as well as the level-headed suggestions and a couple of things will be different come next season. QBs will go back up to 5 points per TD pass and their yardage bonus might go from 1 point for every 25 yards to 1 point for every 20 yards. I think I undervalued them a bit too much so that should bump them up. As a tradeoff, I’ll likely be getting rid of bonuses for completions as well as carries for RBs. I’ll be keeping completions for WRs though. C’mon, without that, these WRs would be close to useless. I’m also thinking about totally revamping D/STs and doing away with the points allowed bonus. On this one, I’m very open to suggestions (and if I had my druthers I’d dump the entire position).

League Manager Software:
So, after 10 games, how does everyone feel about ESPN? I’m still up in the air about them. I guess their system works, and we haven’t run into any issues so far this season. And it’s free so that’s cool. Still, if there’s something better out there, I’m thinking we should explore it (and I will). Any suggestions here would be helpful. To be honest, I wish we could go back to CBS Sports, but I refuse to pay $180. Totally unacceptable.

Draft:
I mentioned this one before and I thought I’d bring it up again to see where the interest level is. We have GOT to switch to an auction style draft. I guarantee you will think it’s totally badass and you’ll wonder why we did snake drafting for so long. With an auction draft, every team has a chance at any player as long as they’re willing to pay for him. This year, Brees went with the second pick; well, with an auction draft, the other teams that had an interest (and I know there were a number of you) are welcome to him. The question simply becomes, how much is he worth to you? I direct you to this excellent article here.  I tell ya, auctions are the future of fantasy football and once you try it you will never want to go back.

  1. Paul,

The QB ides is good, Keep the WR scoring where it’s at….I have told you for a while now…get rid of the d/st and implement defensive players…my god they contribute to victories as well…

I must be sold on the auction draft..I’m not a fan….and whoever takes D.Brees or any QB @ 2 is a fool!!!!!

  2. What’s there to sell? Look at it another way – why NOT try it? What makes serpentine drafts so awesome that trying a new system would be unacceptable?
Honestly, I think it’s just a little fear of the unknown. That’s why I’m starting the campaign now so that owners can begin to study and learn about them. Plus, as I mentioned throughout the preseason, ESPN allows teams to try mock auctions so there’s more than enough opportunities to develop a comfort level.

  3. Suggestion for next year. Trim down the rosters a bit. I fine with the current starting lineup format, but I think the benches are a little too deep. The free agent pool is crap, and we got a whole bunch of really good players just sitting on benches. This is the main reason you never see trades anymore.

Also a benefit of trimming the benches, the draft will be shorter. Nudge nudge wink wink.

As far as the auction stuff, I’ll have to research it and get back with you.

  4. I do not agree,

    Bench depth is fine!

    • Spoken like someone with a high scoring team who has no interest in “sharing the wealth”…

  5. I was thinking along Who Dat’s line – I’m thinking one less on the bench.

And here’s one for ya – perhaps the return of the mandatory tight end…?

  6. Well, I do like the removal of one bench position, and the mandatory Tight End. Just adding that position alone would add back depth into the waiver pool. Another option too: Can you set the postions into the bench?? ie: 1 RB, 2 WR/TE, 1 QB, 1 TE, 1 D/ST, 1 K

I think if we were able to set that up, we can still cover our “bi-week” schedules, leave guys on the waiver, and keep people from gobbeling up players and leaving them on the bench.

In terms of scoring, I don’t think we need to do too much. Some sort of more positive scoring for the D/ST to add value to that position would be welcome. I would leave the RB and WR positional scoring as is.

  7. OH, and the Draft thing… I’m fine with it either way, since I haven’t really been doing this long enough to have a preference. I experimented with the Auction style, and found that it really is just “different” in that you have to watch you are bidding for and what you are willing to spend… so, if someone wants to bid 75% of their budget on Tom Brady, or both of the Manning brothers in the first round, more power to ‘em, since that leaves more available players for a decent price for the rest of us.

The only downside is that there will be guys upping bids just to dwindle the budgets of others, FOGARTY!

  8. Lol,

Did I mention that I pounded you into a bag of mashed up assholes this weekend!!!!!!

    • Boom goes the dynamite.

  9. I think cutting the bench is a terrible idea. If anything, it should be expanded.

There is plenty of talent on the waiver wire. I’ve picked up Miles Austin, Reshard Mendenhall, etc. You just have to be willing to pick someone up and cut a draft pick, which for some reason some of you refuse to do until like week 5.

I also think there’s no reason to add more points to QBs. They score enough as it is. I would like to see more points subtracted for interceptions and fumbles. If you throw for 300 yards but throw 5 picks you should not have 12 points. That should be a 0 or something close to it.

Same for rushing. If you get 100 yards and fumble four times you should not have a good score.

I don’t like the idea of drafting individual defensive players.

I’m still not sure how I feel about points per reception. I think it overvalues mediocre RBs that catch a lot of passes for minimal yards. I like that yardage bonuses though.

I do not like points for carries and never have. It’s a stupid stat. Who cares how many carries a guy gets. It’s about yardage not carries.

As far as an auction draft, I like that idea but it would destroy some teams like the Vatas, who by the way I will defeat tonight, because they’d blow their wad on Manning and have a scrub team the rest of the year- well, now that I think about it, that’s pretty much what they do now anyway.

Finally, I knew I should have vetoed that dumb ass trade that gave the Stains Chris Johnson. Oh well, it just means I’ll beat Tom by 30 instead of 50.

  10. Well that didn’t take long. Nice knowing ya Vatas.

  11. The Browns should be dropped to Division IAA.

That’s the worst team I’ve ever seen. I want the last three hours of my life back.

Brady Quinn is almost as bad as Cutler.

    • Well congratulations you asshole!!!! You beat my team by one win!!!!! You have a ways to go!!!!! Do I hear a torn ACL in one of your players????? HHHHMMMMMM

      • Dam it!!! I hate to eat my words!!!! I didn’t realize you were 6-3 you freaking butthead!!!!!!

  12. Its not really about having a deep bench. Its more like hoarding. I know, cuz I do it and I’m not the only one. I’ll pick up a player that I have no intention of playing just so someone else cant.

Congradufuckulations, you have a lot of points goint to waste on your bench.

  13. Hey Sweat Stains…I believe I beat the absolute fuck out of you a few weeks back….

And in no way….Is that scrub ass team of yours doing anything…

Miles Austin is exactly what he is showing a 4th wideout and in 3 weeks you will dump his ass….like you did S.Smith earlier…who I traded for C.Johnson….

And in no way could you have vetoed that deal the points were damn near exact….

Yes,I agree with Kevin, the bench players should be per position for depth….No, I do not agree with minus points for fumbles the offensive players are playing against professionals as well….That’s why we need Defensive player’s in the scoring…..

And as I stated the Saints were fucking horrible for 30fucking Yrs… So don’t get crazy, karma will catch up with them….

Your team is full of castoffs, one and done for you in the playoffs……And you know it!
