Changes for next season

As it’s never to early to plan for next year, here are a couple of rules changes/amendments that I will most likely be implementing for the coming season and beyond. Understand that this is sort of stream-of-consciousness thinking here:

- Any owner who fails to submit a legitimate starting lineup two times in a given season will be removed from the league and will forfeit all funds/winnings due. My definition of a legit lineup is one where there are no injured players or players on bye in the starting lineup. Now, obviously there’s some leeway with this as an occasional late injury scratch might occur. And there is the occasional time when a team would rather hold onto a player rather than drop him for bye week purposes – say, if both kickers are on bye but they’re ranked #1 and #2 in points. In those cases, the owner’s taking a chance that they can win without those points. And I think we can all tell the difference between those sorts of lineup moves and what has happened over the last couple of weeks with you-know-who. I’ll have to work out better verbiage than what is written above, but that’s the general gist.
- Next up, no drafting three QBs. It has really killed the free agent QB market and stifles trade talk with QBs also. Granted, I personally just pulled off a trade involving a QB this past week, but it’s clearly been the exception and not the rule. I think drafting two QBs is more than enough.
- I’m considering implementing a sort of injury reserve slot. So, if for instance you’ve got a couple of players on bye and another one injured, but you don’t want to drop any of them to make room, then one can instead put the injured player in that slot, then pick up a short-term replacement. Actually, what might work better would be some sort of a flex position that can be filled with any type of player.
- In addition to drafting one less QB, I might consider dropping the requirement of drafting four RBs down to three, but in return for those two specific positions being drafted, owners would instead draft two flex positions of whatever type of player they’d want.
- I’m a little disappointed in the lack of trades this season, so I’m thinking of allowing every team one free trade during the first, say six weeks of the season. Or perhaps we could make trades cost less than free agent pickups. So, for every player added to your roster via a trade, the cost would be $2 a player as opposed to $3.

That’s what I’ve got in my head right now. I at least wanted to get it down “on paper” while I was thinking about it.

  1. The number one way to fix all of that is to do away with making team’s draft 4 RBs or 3 Qbs etc. etc. Just let everyone draft whoever they want. There should be no roster limits on certain positions. Personally, I’d rather have 6 RBs than 2 Kickers and Defenses. I have a lot of good ideas I will post later.
